FIVE MOUNTAIN PASSES TOUR

This Itinerary has been prepared to accommodate the visitor who has fairly limited time in the Western Cape, but who would like to tour as much of the countryside surrounding Cape Town as possible before returning to overnight in the City.

We travel via Sir Lowry’s Pass up over the Hottentots-Holland Mountains into the Grabouw Valley which is the centre of our deciduous fruit growing industry. From here our tour takes us northwards, continuing through this lush, fruit growing region to Villiersdorp, stopping en route to visit some of the fresh fruit farm stalls found in the area.

After Villiersdorp we pass the huge Theewaterskloof Dam and turn off to the west to cross the breathtaking Franschhoek Pass over the Great Drakenstein Mountains into the Franschhoek Valley. We stop in the rustic and pretty little village of Franschhoek for a wine tasting at one of the many Wine Estates found here.

The tour then takes us northwards to Paarl, passing by the Klein Drakenstein Prison, from which Nelson Mandela was released in February, 1990. From here we bear eastwards again to cross the majestic Du Toits Kloof Mountains via the scenic Du Toits Kloof Pass. This brings us down to the wonderfully fertile Breede River Valley which is also a prime grape-growing region.

At the tiny village of Goudini we set off across the Slanghoek Valley, making our way toward crossing the formidable Elandshoek Mountains via the narrow and dramatically scenic Bains Kloof Mountain Pass. This Pass brings us down into the quaint village of Wellington from which pass through the Boland again as we make our way back to Cape Town via the N1.

This tour takes winds its way through some of the most dramatic and spectacular scenery in the Cape. The vistas from the heights of the mountains are second to none and numerous photo stops are incorporated so be sure you have sufficient memory on your camera card and don’t forget your binoculars!
